Ekasi Educational Initiative helps solve the X-Y factor!

Teachers par excellence. Tutors Doc Mavhunga and Clan Masipa with students from EEI , White City Jabavu, Soweto.

Based in White City Jabavu, it helps students with Economics, Accounting, Business Studies, Geography, Life Sciences, Physical Science, Maths Literacy & Pure Maths.

Mzansi is currently languishing at the bottom internationally when coming to Maths literacy and hopefully this programme will try and remedy the situation, particularly in township schools.

Started in 2010 (the year of World Cup) by professionals Doc Mavhunga and Clan Masipa whose idea is to impart their hard earned knowledge with students who are faced with difficulties majoring in mentioned subjects.

As a result, the programme has received over 300 registration and still accepting-a sign of bearing fruition.

“EEI was a dream that I knew would not only empower our youth but also improve our communities, the youth are the key holders of the future, if they are not well equipped and supported I am afraid the future will look bleak,” says Mavhunga, (27) full-time chemical engineer.

The classes are held on weekends and school holidays and both professionals are assisted by teachers in their respective fields, who are all volunteers.

Also full time electrical engineer Masipa (25) added that: “EEI staff members all have a common goal and that is to empower our students, we achieve this by hiring for attitude rather than experience. Although our staff members are teachers by profession in their respectful subjects, we also cater for members whom have the knack for teaching and this alone has helped us achieve our primary goal”.

EEI recently held their first meeting for 2017 with parents of last year’s matriculants, where top students were recognized for their hardwork.

The programme is also celebrated for producing one of Gauteng’s top achiever Buhle Hlatshwayo- 5 distinctions and twins Andile & Wandile Ndaba- received distinctions, as well.

Other students include Zwelethu Machepa, Pholoso Maxam, Judy Chauke and Thato Lee, who were also top performers.

As an NGO, the organization depends solely on donations made by parents of attending students and help with administration, stationery and food.

However, additional grants are welcome from organizations, companies and individuals.

EEI adage is “empowering as far as the eyes can see” an empowering message indeed!
