The marriage is a three-year deal which, according to sources was initiated months ago, following unconvincing persuasion from other motoring companies who were keen to sign on the dotted lines.
Addressing large contingent of the press, Sundowns’ President and mining mogul Patrice Motsepe said the partnership would herald good results in that both brands have good followership, locally and internationally.
“ For the family of Down’s this means we will be able to fully attend to other responsibilities such as providing care to our CSI and academy projects, amongst others,” says Motsepe as he took his position alongside his lieutenants.
Motsepe went as far as using the Davos meetings in Switzerland, as an opportunity to unlock business deals for the country, having met key decision makers from Honda during interactions.
“Good business model is good -so does football which requires effort and key management decisions to help the brand equity of the club and, this partnership has all that ingredients.”
Yoshiaki Nakamura, Managing Director at Honda Southern Africa, says we found a natural alignment in the philosophies of two organizations. Both have the belief that nothing is impossible.
“Sundowns vision which is Sky is the Limit and Honda’s The Power of Dreams are philosophies which strive to be better, and to always give our fans and customers an end product that give satisfaction, enjoyment and pride,” says the pint-sized Nakamura.
The motoring sponsorships which was not popular within the soccer fraternity until recently, has seen teams such Chiefs, Pirates, Swallows, Black Leopards and others, partnering in multi-million deals.
As customary no value of the partnership was mentioned, suffice to say only 20 vehicles will be made available to management and technical team.
Asked if, any Down’s player has been identified to be the ambassador, celebrated former radio presenter Kabelo Mosito, the club’s spin-doctor said he would not comment at this stage.
Motsepe also ‘sugar-coated’ his briefing having announced he will present the Honda vehicle to the winning Miss Sundowns this year.
Unassuming Brian Baloyi, who was accompanied by senior team members such as Teko Modise, Ezrom Nyandoro, Calvin Marlin and Surprise Moriri, says the deal will add as an impetus to the team, and steer them to succeed in their quest for clinching the league.
Speaking exclusively to SOWETOLIFE MAGAZINE ONLINE, Moriri, hinted they’re ready for the kick-off as they travel to Amazulu for the league clash this week.
“We’re ready and fit for the league after a recess. Thus far we have no injuries and the whole squad is raring to do battle with our opponents.”
Asked if, personally does he think the introduction of new players could affect the rhythm of the team, Moriri said, that would not be a problem considering that they’ve been in training for the past two weeks and playing friendly matches ahead of the PSL season kick-off.
“I’m fit and 100% in brilliant shape.”
