SAFTAS to go on with or without SABC

They will be held on the 9th and 10th of March 2012 at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

SAFTAS recognizes industry players in both television and film awards. The award’s main objectives is to honour, celebrate and promote the creativity, quality and excellence of South African film and television talent and encourage entrepreneurship and the development of new talent in the  industry.

Although talks between the organizers and SABC are on going, the show goes on!

This year’s awards have been themed ‘heritage’ which will encompass the celebrations of the African National Congress as it celebrates its 100th centenary.

Leading the drama genre categories with 23 nominations is Intersexions, the popular SABC 1 drama series whose storyline was based on the HIV/AIDS infection chain in the society through the interconnectedness of the people’s sexual networks. Another SABC 1 drama series that features prominently in the drama genre categories is Sokhulu & Partners with 10 nominations.

In the soap genre categories, Scandal and Rhythm City received 7 nominations each while Isidingo and Generations received 4 and 3 nominations respectively. As with every year, the public will get the opportunity to vote for their favourite soap in the Best TV Soap category, this award will see all participating TV soapies going for the Golden Horn, namely Generations, Isidingo, Rhythm City, Scandal!, Muvhango and The Wild.

7 de Laan did not receive a nomination into this category as the soapie was not entered for the SAFTAS.

Grooves Productions’ under Lehlohonolo Lehana has been tasked to work alongside Clive Morris Productions during the SAFTAS ceremony.

Speaking exlusively to SOWETOLIFE MAGAZINE ONLINE, Hlouks as we call Lehlohonolo, says he was ecstatic for being afforded the chance to work with one of South Africa’s top producers and, honoured to produce the awards.

“Life is what you give. I’ve given time and resources to be where I am today. This is the chance I’m willing to grab with both hands and most importantly, to share the experience with other budding film producers as much as I was given the chance.”

The SAFTAS Chairperson Eddie Mbalo says guests can expect to experience a truly South African yet world class awards ceremony. He further noted that the importance of recognising and developing young talent through the SAFTAS highlights the objective of the awards.

The first event will award winners in the Non-fiction categories and the second event will award Fiction categories.
