Soweto born, Alex based DJ Shony scoops a slot with Gagasi FM

Known in the entertainment industry as DJ Shony, the lad from Alexandra has secured himself as a slot with the burgeoning Durban urban radio station Gagasi FM, this week.

iBuzz, the show or lounge is co-hosted by Raphael (Imbewu ETV) and Hope Mbhele, and DJ Shony will add a flavour element in the form of disc spinning.

“This is one of my peak of my career as I embrace God’s love on me,” uttered the (26).

Albeit born in Pimville- Soweto, DJ Shony grew up in Alex (Soddom & Gomorrah)- a stone away from the financial muscle of the country Sandton. This is where he learnt the art of playing with the discs. Yes, when the buck has bitten there’s no turning back!

He admitted that he was introduced to the music industry at a very young age through his older brother who opened a small record shop in Alexandra called Open House.

DJ Shony comes from a family of four, him included (2 brothers and a late sister).

“I was always with my brother Harold who has travelled many African countries for musical shows.

“I learnt the challenges and the opportunities through him. I used to interact with professional artists who used to visit Open House productions. I grew interest and I was more motivated to be around celebrities at my young age,” he said.

As a result has brushed shoulders with notable and gurus of this world having featured in Vinny Da Vinci’s exclusive annual birthday party, Soul Candi Selektor Series Jozi Edition, and Soccer Legends tribute powered by Three Ships Whiskey.

DJ Shony also participated in Nick Holder’s international tour in 2013. And was selected as one of the performing DJs  at the Soul Candi Pioneers of House album launch by UPZ Avi Elman -a world renowned DJ.

He released a single ‘Who’s Gonna Color’ featuring Tshegofatso.

The single is a hot club, festival, outdoor, indoor cheerful record/song, with a turn-up feel, that has a driving kick drum and bassline added by smooth gentle pads, all perfectly placed under Tshegofatso’s vocals which are sung in English and Setswana.

In his five years career as a club DJ and music producer, DJ Shony has worked on shows such as Turn Up Dance on ETV as resident DJ along Dr Malinga and Chommie. On the production side has had a string of hits like Oga featuring Mochachino, amongst others.

 “I have always been swimming with the big fishes. “I knew that my destination is higher and this new job is a beautiful surprise but expected,” boasted DJ Shony, a father of one.

Just like any other DJ that has made it in their own community, DJ Shony has given back by being the co-organizer of Alexandra DJ Experience and the In-Yard X-mas Experience that marks the calendar in Alexandra’s history as the biggest social event around Christmas time.

Catch him on Gagasi FM every Saturday between 4pm and 7pm, were he’ll will be in charge of the last 30 mix.
