Who really killed Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalminder Senzo Meyiwa still remains a mystery?
If anything that went by at Boksburg Magistrate Court, following a spectacle on Tuesday, when five men accused of murder, refused to step into the dock, the family of Senzo and the country are in for a drama that is going to unfold.
The Umlazi born Senzo was mysteriously shot and killed at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s Vosloorus home in 2014.
The five accused Muzikawulahlelwa S’tembu Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokosizeni Ziphozonke Maphisa and Sifikuhle Nkani Ntuli were yesterday charged with Meyiwa’s murder.
More drama unfolded when accused No: 3 told the Court: “I do not see the need to get a legal representative because I do not know why I was brought to court. I will not enter the dock because I didn’t kill Senzo.”
Identified as Mncube he went further and said: “Police minister Bheki Cele said some of us were arrested from outside. We have been in prison for a number of years and that’s a lie. Don’t play with us,” causing more confusion to the packed Court and of course to the Meyiwa’s family.
In refusing to stand in the dock, Maphisa, the fourth suspect, told the court that: “The people who are supposed to be appearing before court are not here because they have money. It means the court will have to direct questions to me because I do not have money for legal representation.”
The five men are accused of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, illegal possession a firearm and ammunition.
Magistrate Hans Havenga told the accused that their refusal to cooperate was inconsequential because the matter was being recorded.
In a leaked document from National Prosecuting Authority, it alleges Khumalo was in contact with accused No:5 Ntuli and her mobile was to be handed over for further investigation.
The two allegedly communicated telephonically and it was mentioned that there was a lender who allegedly gave money to “ostensibly pay hitmen and that this lender was pestering her Khumalo for the repayment of this loan”.
NPA spokesperson Sipho Ngwema did not want to elaborate further and said the investigations are on-going.
AfriForum’s Gerrie Nel, an advocate who is representing the Meyiwa’s family, believes the murder was a ‘hit’ and confirmed the mastermind behind the murder was still at large.
“I am shocked because the police are the ones who brought them here, alleging they have also made confessions. I was hoping they would step into the box, but they don’t want to enter,” pointed out the frustrated Meyiwa’s brother Sifiso Meyiwa, whose mother is reportedly unwell due to prolonged case that seemingly is becoming more confusing.
