The Provincial Department of Health has set up mobile vaccination sites at SASSA pay points to target persons 60 years and older. As from 6am until 3pm on both days, pensioners willing to take the jab will be vaccinated with the two dose Pfizer vaccine.
Yamkela Dlunge assistant director Provincial Healthcare Promotions for Johannesburg says, “We have decided to target SASSA pay points to quickly educate, encourage and vaccinate pensioners so that we can get as many elderly people protected against this Delta strain of the virus”
As the Pfizer vaccine is a two-jab vaccine, pensioners will be given a 42-day return date for the next jab.
Layla Campbell manager Healthcare Promotions in the City says, “For their second jab, they will be directed to their nearest non-medical site to ensure that they do get vaccinated”.

Since opening Covid-19 Non-Medical Sites (NMS) on the 26 May 2021 in the various city regions, over 40 000 over sixties have been vaccinated. This is still short of the 500 000 mark set when vaccinations opened in May 2021 possibly due to hesitancy, fake news or beliefs. The reality is that whilst this may be the case, Covid infections are rising at an alarming rate.
This has spurred government to start vaccinating persons 50 years and older as well who can register online or walk in to get the jab. Soon this will be extended to those aged 18 to 39 years.
As of yesterday 5 July 21, Gauteng had 709 628 confirmed Covid 19 cases, 13 603 deaths, 604 556 recoveries and 91 469 active cases.
Thus far no serious complications or deaths have been reported of any person 60years and above who has been vaccinated.
To receive the vaccine you need to pre-register on an online registration system known as the Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS)

You need the following to register
- Access to the internet on any device (cell phone, laptop, table, desktop)
- Your ID number or passport, (foreign national) Asylum certificate
- Your residential address
- Your cellphone number
Those who do not have access to the internet or mobile device can pre-register at their local clinics and vaccination sites. Those who are immobile will be assisted to register by community health care workers at their homes.
