Glenvista High School ‘rogue’ students burn school because they refuse to sit for exams

On Monday students or ‘arsonists’ set alight the school for refusing to write their assessment.

Instead they retaliated by setting the school alight that caused the damage in the region of R400 000.

A grade 12 pupil, said the situation was devastating, especially because it was their last year. “We now had to write our exam outside. It was difficult as there were many distractions, it was hot and exhausting,” she said.

Another pupil, said it was exhausting to write outside in the heat. “It’s very disappointing and scary to see what kids pupils our age are capable of doing. It puts a very bad image on Glenvista,” she said.

Gatvol MEC for education in Gauteng said his department will not pay for refurbishment.

After visiting the school, the irritated Lesufi said: ”We are devastated to discover pupils could go as far as committing an act of arson, destroying school infrastructure in the process, to escape an important assessment. We will not fix the damage caused by the fire.”

Lesufi said despite the attempt to not write the assessment, pupils ended up writing it outside on the school field.

Glenvista High Principal Thobile Morgan said she was notified by a teacher that the hall was on fire.

“This happened on Monday at about 11.05am. A teacher came in to say the hall was burning and I rushed there to find the hall on fire.

“I called fire fighters and the police. An investigation is being conducted.”

Morgan said the arsonists had sneaked out of their classes and headed to the hall to torch it.

The fire destroyed curtains, a projector screen, electrical wiring, the public address system and some furniture.

Investigations are on-going.

Meanwhile, learners at Fochville Secondary School 2 have spoken out against a teacher they accuse of sexual misconduct, bullying and intimidation.

Kaya News has exclusively spoken to a large group of girls at the school, who claim the teacher in question has consistently been carrying out his misconduct over the past two years.

The learners say the teacher has touched some pupils inappropriately and purposely failed them in class when they fought against his advances.

A number of young girls at #FochvilleSecondary school have told KayaNews that a teacher they accuse of sexual misconduct sometimes went as far as touching them, making inappropriate remarks and failing them if they if they disapproved of his advances.

Parents of the school governing body met on Monday and have called on the teacher to be dismissed from the institution. Some girls have given detailed accounts of how the teacher often made inappropriate remarks.

Angry parents say that the school governing body leadership took so long to deal with the matter of alleged sexual misconduct at the school.

The matter was brought to the principal’s attention 3-months ago and learners were told she would investigate the matter however nothing was done.
