Two suspects who robbed SA’s icon uGogo Esther Mahlangu arrested

TWO SUSPECTS have been arrested for robbery and assault of internationally renowned Ndebele artist uGogo Esther Mahlangu.

 According to SABC News two suspects are being questioned by Police after they followed “strong leads.”

uGogo Mahlangu was robbed and strangled at her home in Weldervrede near Siyabusa on Saturday, 19. Her gun was also stolen.

She sustained some injuries to her face.

She was later found by her granddaughter who informed the neighbours and members of the Siyabuswa police station were summoned to the scene.

The Mpumalanga police asked members of the public to provide information that could help the investigation and offered a  R50 000 reward.

“During the robbery, the defenceless pensioner was reportedly assaulted and strangled where her hands were tied with a cord,” said South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

Suspects also stole her safe and undisclosed amount of cash.

A manhunt was launched and two suspects were arrested.

But others are still at large.

The two have been charged with possession of unlawful of firearm and house robbery and appeared before the Mdutjana Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga.
