ON TUESDAY 18 July, globally recognized as Mandela Day, hundreds of Joburg City employees took part in various humanitarian and environmental activities throughout the City.
It was a sunny warm day and in the true spirit of giving, hundreds of fruit and indigenous trees were planted in different Regions, food parcel, shoes, blanket and sanitary pad distribution at some schools and women and children shelters.
Together with some private partnerships, several parks were cleaned including assisting at the Rahima Moosa Hospital, painting and cleaning some libraries and community centres.
There were several educational programmes with the standout being a coding Programme in Noordgesig and discussions with youth about the Mandela legacy.
In Region G, MMC for Transport, Kenny Kunene arrived with a bus load of employees dressed to work who began painting and cleaning the No More Victims Shelter in Eldorado Park that houses children. A bus load of children from the shelter were taken to the Johannesburg Zoo.
Whilst they were away, repairs, painting and cleaning began in earnest.
The shelter was also a recipient of a new kitchen, a refurbished office with MMC Kunene pledging to donate R2 500 of his salary for six months.
He also committed new double bunks with mattresses and a new bath. A hosepipe and high-pressure hose were also donated to support the carwash run by the elder boys and girls.
Liesel Valoo the founder of the shelter could not contain her excitement and expressed her appreciation to the MMC and officials.
MMC Kunene then left for Kliptown Square where he met with Joburg Roads Agency employees ready to undertake road repairs, marking and pavement installation at the busy Boundary Road among other streets.
He also met with a large crowd of disgruntled community members from Kliptown Zone 9, seeking employment and assurances of attending to their complaints about stormwater and the need for tarred roads.
