THE department of Health in Gauteng has paid large portion of money owed to City Power.
This was confirmed by Motalatale Modiba, spokesperson for the department, who said they’ve already paid a large portion of outstanding debt.
The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) says it has already paid some R32 million of the R41 million that the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital owes the utility.
City Power says its owed millions by the Children’s Memorial Institute R47m, while Charlotte Maxeke Hospital owed R41m and was due to be disconnected on Thursday, and Helen Joseph Hospital was sitting with a debt of R13m.
Coronation Hospital owes City Power about R4m with South Rand Hospital sitting at R3m and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital is sitting at R2.6m.
This means the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital will not be disconnected.
“We’re saying we’ve already paid about R32, 474, 000 between April and September 2023, we had to go through an exercise yesterday [Wednesday] just going through every record in terms of the invoices we have received and the invoices we have serviced.
“We know that we have got an additional R4.9 million that has been finalised for payment this week and then we have an invoice of R5.2 million that’s currently being processed so that a purchase order can be created,” says Modiba.
City Power is struggling with public hospitals across the city not paying their electricity bills, says spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
“This really puts us in a difficult but unfortunate position where we find ourselves being forced to cut electricity in some of these facilities,” Mangena said.
