NLC apologises for grants delay

THE National Lotteries Commission (NLC) is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of transparency and accountability in its grant funding operations.

In light of recent delays in the grant allocation process, the NLC is issuing this statement to update stakeholders on the situation and reassure them of “our commitment to resolving these issues promptly”.

“Ensuring the integrity of our grant funding process is paramount to us at the National Lotteries Commission,” said Commissioner, Jodi Scholtz of the NLC.

“While we understand the frustrations caused by the delays, we want to assure stakeholders that we are working diligently to address the challenges and expedite the grant funding process.”

“Since the commencement of the funding cycle for the current financial year, the NLC has implemented additional measures aimed at strengthening fraud prevention, ensuring the integrity of the grant allocation process thereby ensuring that funds reach the neediest of communities.

These measures include rigorous validation procedures and on-site inspections to verify the compliance status and existence of applying organisations.

These additional measures have unfortunately resulted in unforeseen delays in processing grant applications. We understand the importance of timely funding for the vital work carried out by not for-profit organisations across South Africa, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by these delays”.

As of 11 March 2024, 4416 of the 5304 applications received are currently awaiting adjudication.

“We are anticipating new appointments of additional Distributing Agencies to assist with capacity in Media Statement Issued by the National Lotteries Commission in this area.

From the 888 that have been adjudicated, just over 500 applications have been approved for funding.

At the end of Quarter 3 (December 2023), R 278 million had been allocated for disbursement.

To date, R616 million has been committed to good causes.

“We anticipate clearing the backlog by the second quarter of the 2024/25 financial year, following which the new call for applications will be announced.

We are actively reviewing and optimising our procedures to minimise further delays while maintaining the highest standards of integrity.

We also continue to caution stakeholders on prevalent scams and individuals purporting to be agents working for the NLC. The NLC does not use the services of agents, and applications for grants and access to information are provided free of charge,” says Scholtz.

“The NLC deeply appreciates the patience and understanding of our stakeholders during this time.

Their continued support is crucial as we strive to ensure that funding reaches its intended beneficiaries and makes a meaningful impact in communities throughout South Africa,” concluded Scholtz.
