Identified as Soweto’s economical lifestyle market, it has been scheduled from December 20- with the launch- to 22 at Poka Street, Orlando West, Soweto.
As it celebrates its tenth edition, it coincides with Gauteng Tourism Agency’s – ‘Golden Summer Ena’lanto eGauteng’ latest campaign, that seeks to invite locals to travel within their border and to create conducive environments for township businesses to flourish.
By offering small businesses and creatives a sustainable platform, the festival showcases the strength, innovation, and potential of township economies. So tell Makhe to tell another Makhe on what is building up this weekend… from live music and performances, movie screenings and storytelling, bubbly and wine tasting, arts, and crafts market to family-oriented fun.
Patrons can also discover flavours of Soweto and support local artisans and entrepreneurs at the street Food and Makers Market.
Revelers, be it local and international visitors can also get to explore Soweto through bike rides, guided heritage tours and curated visits to youth-owned businesses and emerging township hotspots. It is such nuances that make Makhelwane Festival more than just about celebration; but a platform that showcases the incredible potential of township economies.
Sthembiso “Sthe” Dlamini, GTA CEO says that, over the years the province has seen tremendous growth in how business is conducted in townships as well as the vast opportunities available to customize services which cater directly to the needs of these communities.
“Such initiatives speak directly to our mandate as government to create conducive environments for township businesses to flourish”, says Dlamini. “The festival looks beyond domestic tourism, it is a subsidiary initiative for township products where organizers aim to develop and drive township tourism to further create sustainable platforms for young creatives and entrepreneurs across Gauteng,” she added.
Speaking at the launch of the G20 presidency, President Ramaphosa emphasized that it is important for South Africa that its G20 Presidency is inclusive.
To demonstrate this inclusiveness, South Africa intends to create a new engagement group, the Township20 or TS20. This will highlight the creative, cultural, financial, and innovative capacities of South Africa’s township economies.

The line-up for (Friday 20th ) is as follows: Nicki B (Kaya 959), Brian Blaq, S-Girl, Fusion, Lady Choc and Chainz, taking place at Native Rebels- Jabavu.
On Saturday, entertainers feature the likes of Boisanza, Mawhoo, Lia Butler, Saul Madiope, Obrigado Experience (Kenzhero & Muzik), and more.
Sunday’s New Age Street Party will bring Soweto’s vibrant street culture to life.
