Alex Clean Up campaign kicks off on June 16!

Filth. The Alexandra Clean Up campaign seeks to deal with the stench and filth at one of the country’s celebrated tounships Alex.

It is infested with dirt, filth and manifesting diseases. Yes, that’s Alexandra one of the oldest townships in the country yet only a stone throw away from the hustling and bustling Sandton City.

Well, if the cleaning campaign initiated by the locals in the form of The Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa-Alexandra is anything to go by, then Alex could be a cleaner and healthier city after-all.

As part of commemorating the historical June 16th events countrywide, the church in partnership with locals, Pikit Up, Sasol, Alex FM and faith based missions, will  join hands in a campaign Clean Up Alex on Thursday (June 16).

The key message of the campaign is to conscientious residents on the importance and benefits of recycling, cleanness as part of attracting tourists to the township.

According to the organizers, they seek to identify resources to fulfill the objectives of the campaign; identify interest partners and stakeholders; initiate campaign communication across various platforms; lobbying interested parties; embark on environmental training and workshops and logistical requirements.

The campaign is expected to continue way after the June 16 commemorations.

Alex-simply known as GaMampyane- has produced world’s most celebrated statesman, Nelson Mandela and artists such as Hugh Masekela, Caiphus Semenya, Condry Ziqubu, Ntemi Piliso, Banza Kgasoane, former lately Mo‐T (Micasa), football administrators Irvin “Iron Duke” Khoza and former NSL boss the late Dr Leepile Taunyane.

Dr Reverend Sam Buti, who founded the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa, is the brains behind the Save Alex Campaign in the late 1970s.

The campaign will begin in the morning from URCSA.
