AmaKhosi wins Nedbank Cup, as coach Nabi set to resign

CONGRATULATIONS to Kaizer Chiefs on winning the Nedbank Cup against Orlando Pirates 2-1 at the packed Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, on Saturday afternoon.

The gold and black outfit pockets a whopping R7m.

The win for AmaKhosi since securing a first major title as far back as 2015, was a bitter-sweet as reports have confirmed coach Nasreddine Nabi, will be handing over his resignation letter.

Nabi was under pressure the moment he signed on the dotted lines, perhaps unknowingly what he was getting himself into.

The Naturena side is known for consistency and hardwork, that we saw over the weekend, but it was a case of too late for the Tunisian mentor.

Former Sundowns’ star Gaston Sirino put Chiefs ahead from the penalty spot, before Bucs Evidence Makgopa equalised shortly after.

Chiefs’ utility skipper Yusuf Maart, sealed the win – from a player whose leadership has been under scrutiny all season.

The cup hungry fans, countrywide, are still rejoicing after this historic win, which means the ninth PSL placed AmaKhosi will play in CAF next season.

Chiefs’ spokesperson Vina Maphosa, whom I bumped into at one of the busiest filling stations in KwaZulu-Natal, was coy when asked what is the future of coach Nabi, suffice to say ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about’.

Talk of KZN, some of the filling stations ran out of fuel, that propelled us for a detour for another 10km outside Durban.

As for packed hotels and lodges in and outside eThekweni, this means the GDP of the province has skyrocketed, and economy will improve those marginalised, especially the affected areas that faced floods and homeless families, etc…

My sincere thanks should also be attributed to the SAPS, VOC and other safety authority teams, who made sure thousands of fans, felt safe in and outside the sold-out stadium, including Durban, itself.

And the City is clean, I think Joburg should and must, take a leaf from this experience!

As for Chiefs, its back to the drawing board as we await the announcement of new mentor.

Bucs coach Jose Riveiro, whose side beat Chiefs in last week’s Soweto derby, has resigned with immediate effect after Saturdays’ loss.
