Yes, the SUV market is by far incomparable and investors seem to be smiling from ear to mouth.

Did I hear someone utter ‘discover Isuzu- Zulu?

I tested the new Isuzu MU-X seven-seater and the much improved cabin, the feel and the looks ticks all the right spots. A female freelance photographer was even more surprised considering my body frame vs rugged and bold SUV…?

Sun-City in the Platinum province, was an ideal destination for this six-speed auto test and what a bumpy joy of ride had by all- thanks to its ruggedness, frame construction best suited for myriads of potholes and off-road experience in the famous Pilanesberg game reserve.

It covered the ground exceptionally well due to its coil springs in the rear suspension and its 235mm ground clearance.

Yes, it is fashionable boasting arrow-shaped Bi-LED headlamps and Onyx model style with dual-tone 20-inch alloy wheels, thanks to its black leather seats and the door panels smartened up with white contrast stitching. Aha.

The seats are comfortable and well bolstered for side support, and the Onyx’s front two seats are heated and electrically adjustable. It comes with a modular interior that allows the second and third rows to fold flat and create a cavernous maw. There are air-conditioning vents for all three rows.

On safety- it has seven airbags including a segment-first centre airbag between the driver and front passenger, and the Onyx has adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist

The touchscreen infotainment system is supplemented by physical buttons on the dashboard and steering, one USB port for the front seats, but the second row gets a pair of them, along with a 150W two-pronged socket.

As we cajoled in the MU-X, from Sun City to Tlhabane location, one could feel the power in it, the 3.0l turbo diesel engine boosted from 130kW to 140kW, with torque taking an even bigger jump from 380Nm to 450Nm. It’s a four-cylinder turbo diesel.

Look, I would not say I was impressed with the fuel consumption of 12l/100km but being a big SUV one had to contend with its claimed 7.6l. Its all depended on how you rev it and it does allow for that throttle down.

‘The improved power and more appealing exterior and interior should place it on the shortlist of adventure-seeking family buyers’ considering its tourism/heritage month in SA. So, get out and be adventurous in the MU-X!

It features electric windows, keyless central locking, LED daytime driving running lights, auto on/off headlights, rain sensor wipers, electric tailgate, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable front seats, heated front seats, three zone climate control, seven airbags, ABS brakes, stability control, park distance control, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new MU-X is one of the safest vehicles in its class with a five-star Australasian NCAP rating.

It retails for R895. 500
