Downs’ goalminder Williams puts SA on the world map

CONGRATULATORY messages continue for Mamelodi Sundowns goalminder Ronwen Williams.

This follows two big awards he grabbed at the CAF awards in Morocco.

The Bafana Bafana captain with the ninth-best goalkeeper in the world won the Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year Award, respectively.

The 32-year-old, is the first South African to win the Goalkeeper of the Year award, especially after losing out on the much vaunted Ballon d’Or awards- in the Yashin Trophy category- recently.

He also became the second Premier Soccer League player to win the Interclub Player of the Year Award, following in footsteps of Downs teammate and Ugandian Denis Onyango who won the prestigious award in 2016.

However, he became the second South African player to win the Interclub Player of the Year after his Bafana Bafana teammate Percy Tau.

The Al Ahly star was named the Interclub Player of the Year in 2023. However, this recognition came after he missed out on the Yachine Trophy.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Williams became the first goalkeeper to save four penalties in a single TotalEnergies AFCON shootout.

With his heroics at the biggest African football tournament, he was nominated goalkeeper of the tournament.

This hasn’t happened since the competition started in February 1957. However, reports say he is one of the few goalkeepers to achieve this feat across several FIFA major tournaments.

The Gqeberha born thanked previous mentors such as Deshi Baktawer, William Shongwe and others during his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony on December 16.

His teammates joined other current and former players who also sent their congratulatory messages to Williams.

We take our hat off to you Williams, as you put SA on the international map.
