GAUTENG Citizens are warned to exercise caution and to take the necessary safety precautions during this current El Niño season.
According to weather predictions, the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in state in the Gauteng Province. This weather phenomena favours above normal rainfall conditions over several parts of the Gauteng Province during this season. The latest weather forecasts predict severe thunderstorms mainly over the southern parts of Gauteng.
We can also expect large amounts of small hail, heavy downpours, and damaging winds. In addition, these weather conditions can bring about localized flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, Informal Settlements, roads and bridges.
Motorists are advised to avoid flooded roads and swollen streams where rising water levels are observed. Residents are further advised to move to higher grounds during flooding and to avoid seeking shelter under trees and tall objects. With the holiday season in mind specifically, holiday makers and residents are cautioned against going fishing or playing golf during thunderstorms. Golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity and therefore a risk factor to be considered.
The Gauteng Province, just like most parts of the country, is vulnerable to various hazards; both natural and unnatural.
The past year was no different, with disastrous events, such as structural and shack fires, the current severe thunderstorms and heavy rains being experienced in and around Gauteng. These situations demanded that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) to always be in a state of readiness to be proactive and geared to handle these incidents.
Gauteng residents can be assured that our emergency teams from our Disaster Management centre are on standby and ready to deploy to save lives and rescue citizens in need.
