IT’S A bakkie- and why would it be cross with me for taking it off roads and testing its mettle?
And South Africans are just proud of their bakkies, such as the Isuzu D-Max 3.0 Double Cab 4×4 V-Cross.
The recent Nampo- the biggest gathering of agricultural sector in the Free State province, had hundreds of bakkies on exhibition.
So, was the V-Cross Isuzu, built for all kinds of surfaces thanks to high-mounting leaf-spring overslung suspension and twin-tube gas-pressurised shock absorbers.
The front end now features a new lighting signature and a bold grille, while minor adjustments to the vehicle’s dimensions—such as a 30 mm longer wheelbase, a 10 mm higher bonnet, and an extra 30 mm of height in the load bin—make the D-Max look significantly more imposing, even though the overall size remains almost identical to its predecessor.
It rides comfortably on paved roads but taking it off road as I did in the North West province, facing mud, potholes to such an extent I almost got stuck, but thanks to its wheel adjustment it was seamless. Yes, I did panic but I did not want to show that to a youngster who came running to offer assistance in the middle of the night- thanks to torrid rain.
Power is transmitted via a six-speed automatic, with four-wheel drive engaged via a simple rotary dial on the fascia, and the hearing of the big tyres squeaking when you turn, shows how reliable and big it is, resulting in causing ground damage in my yard.
It is said the V-Cross is positioned at buyers who want rich specification, but without sacrificing the workhorse credentials afforded by a double-cab, whether you agree or not, it will be entirely on you- owning one.
It rates at an average of 8.1 litres per 100 km, considering we were only loading some garbage and trees that came at a figure of 8.10, in terms of diesel- lightweight stuff!
A trip to Mbombela to cover the Metro FM awards earlier this month, was seamless, having to fiddle with the -Hill Descent Control, Hill Start assist, and brake systems, et al, since we all know that majestic area is synonymous with beautiful hills and awe inspiring mountains.
Loved the ample space, in the second row for adults, which we used for snacks and energises, and has its own air vents and USB port. Traveling with a partner and her luggage, we decided to ‘gooi’ everything in the boot- thanks to Securi Lid hard foldable roller cover that you can lock.
Climbing into the V-Cross- considering my height- was more pleasant thanks to its quality of materials and the upmarket feel that the brand seems to have achieved.

The familiar nine-inch infotainment system includes a reverse camera, as well as compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, having used the former platform, which integrated without hassle via cable, as opposed to its rivals.
Set apart from its D-Max siblings by a more aggressive front bumper design, tough cladding for the wheel arches, a rear styling bar, as well as black alloy wheels with a distinctive pattern, 18 inches in diameter, the locals dubbed it “ugwaja” or rabbit, because of its unique design.
On the safety front, it boasts eight airbags. Lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control and automatic headlamps comprise the suite of driver assistance features. The D-Max is also equipped with LED daytime running lights mounted in the front bumper. The upgrade to LED DRLs ensures high-level response and better light distribution for improved visibility.
Isuzu brand, is all about toughness and even in the V-Cross, the rugged air of the D-Max is felt, with fairly light but rigid steering, cabin insulation is reasonable and the ride quality is bearable.
This 3.0 TD unit serves up 140kW/450Nm, with the endearing bellow that commercial diesel admirers will appreciate.
It boast:
- 8 Airbags (including curtain)
- ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors with Top Tether
- Front and Rear Disc Brakes
- ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
- EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution)
- BAS (Brake Assist System)
- ESC (Electronic Stability Control)
- TCS (Traction Control System)
- HSA (Hill Start Assist)
- HDC (Hill Descent Control)
- Attention Assist
As indicated in my opening stanza, there was no way it would be ‘cross’ with me, having spent two weeks with it, under intense inspection.
It retails for R925 600

Black perforated leatherette upholstery clads the seats, with the top section of the fascia outfitted in leatherette too. Electrically adjustable seat adjustment for the driver is part of the package.
