Influential figures grace the Mabula Lodge 30th soiree

WHAT began as an audacious plan in 2019 has culminated in a complete transformation of one of South Africa’s most-loved, family-friendly safari destinations.

From umama Yvonne Chaka-Chaka, to former Nedbank chairperson and hotels owner himself Dr Reuel Khoza to 2023 Miss SA, Joan Ramagoshi and entrepreneur husband Jeff Madibeng, did set the tone of the night at the celebrations, in Limpopo.

Legend has it ‘you age like a good wine’ but as for umama Chaka-Chaka, she’s not even closer to that. Humble yet hobnobbing with global stars- me thinks the emerging musicians should take a leaf from her!

“This is Africa’s best- what more would one ask for?” she asked before entertaining guests with her popular Umqombothi hit song.

Mabula Game Lodge has undergone numerous iterations over the years to evolve with the changing needs of customers, sustainability, and nature conservation.

The latest transformation, representing an investment of over R35 million, has seen the property reinvent itself from its 1990s aesthetic to emerge as a sophisticated, contemporary safari destination.

The transformation began with the complete renovation of 51 lodge rooms and modernisation of the restaurant in 2020.

Following the extensive enhancement of the entrance, reception, lounge and bar, the latest phase has focused on refashioning exceptional outdoor spaces, including a gorgeous terrace and an inspired boma venue — the first of its kind to bring innovation to the traditional safari lodge thatched structure and take it to the next level.

Pre and post the celebrations last week Tuesday, that ended up only 2am, the lodge was teeming with international guests and their families, who also feasted on food, top-tier beverages et al.

Mabula Lodge is perched against a backdrop of the Waterberg mountains, and its bubbly owner Jai Ramchadran, says vast resources were allocated to complete this award winning lodge.

“It really does feel like we have come full circle. The new boma and terrace redefine the bush experience in South Africa and we can’t wait to share the latest changes with our guests,” Head of Operations, Extraordinary Group, Wouter Pienaar was quoted.

“We’ve refined the concept of safari, creating something that is relevant and new while honouring the unique character that has made Mabula so special for over thirty years.”

The changes to Mabula also encompass the property’s extensive recreational facilities, reflecting the lodge’s unique position as one of South Africa’s only “safari resorts”.

The tennis court has been completely renovated, and the swimming pool area has been enhanced with elegant Bedouin shade structures replacing traditional umbrellas.

Mabula Game Lodge has set the precedent as one of luxury safari experiences in Southern Africa, following the completion of this transformation.

What would a lodge visit be without a game drive, that made us experience a jaw-breaking moment as herd of Lions were recorded feasting, during a sundowner. Mabula also feature exceptional biodiversity—including the Big Five, cheetah, wild dog, and over 300 bird species, including the offering of  activities such as eco adventure safaris, guided bush walks and horseback rides.

Yes, let’s imbibe on umqombothi – traditional beer, as Mabula turns fab 30!
