THE City of Joburg and the country, has condemned the killing of Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer, Matome Mokoena.
Mokoena and colleague, were responding to a white Volkswagen Polo suspected to have been involved in a robbery on Wednesday, 14 May, in Vlakfontein.
In an act of selfless service, they approached the vehicle to protect the community.
Tragically, Officer Mokoena was ambushed, chased, and fatally shot by the suspects. His service firearm and patrol vehicle were stolen during the attack.
He was based at the Region G Operations.

JMPD Commissioner, Patrick Jaca, has called for swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous crime.
Joburg Speaker of Council, Nobuhle Mthembu, also extends her heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mokoena.
“This incident once again brings to the fore the dangerous conditions under which our law enforcement officers work. More must be done to ensure their safety as they work to keep our City and its residents safe.
I call on law enforcement agencies and the justice system to act swiftly and decisively to ensure that justice is served for the Mokoena family.
An attack on JMPD officers is a direct attack on our city and our collective freedom as residents,” says the Speaker.

The suspects are still at large.
