THE South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has approved the registration of a new HIV-prevention drug that only needs to be taken twice a year.
The drug, Lenacapavir, is the world’s first injectable Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). According to the World Health Organization, Lenacapavir is a highly effective alternative option to the daily oral PrEP pills, as the injection only needs to be taken every six months.
SAHPRA spokesperson Yuven Gounden said that safer sex practices are still recommended as a way to prevent HIV, in addition to Lenacapavir.
“The registration of Lenacapavir is a game-changer, given the high prevalence rate of HIV in South Africa. This product is the most effective HIV prevention measure thus far,” said Gounden.
