A MEMORIAL service of the late former Joburg Mayor Mpho Moerane will be held this afternoon on Friday at Alexandra, his home town.
He passed away in a Johannesburg hospital on Wednesday after being involved in a car crash last week.
He was more of an ‘entrepreneurial leader than a politician’, said the Mayor of Joburg and his name-sake Dr Mpho Phalatse, in describing their working relationship.
Moerane was the Mayor for a brief spell from 1 October to 22 November in 2021.
He followed in the footsteps of former Mayors Geoff Makhubo and Jolidee Matongo, who passed away in quick succession.
The African National Congress (ANC)’s Paul Mashatile said that Moerane will be remembered for his dedication to the people of Joburg.
“He was a community leader, a businessman, a philanthropist,” Mashatile said.
He will be afforded a Civic burial- the highest honour by the City, says Speaker Vasco da Gama.
MEC for Economic Development in Gauteng Parks Tau, also sent message of condolences to the family and friends of Moerane, who is also a former colleague in the ruling party.
“We’ve lost a dedicated cadre in the movement and has left a void that will be hard to fill. May his eternal soul rest forever in Peace,” said Tau, on the sidelines of the Restaurants Awards held in Sandton on Thursday evening.
The former electrician and businessman will be laid to rest on Sunday.
