“I LOOK forward having an intimate times with my fellow South Africans, yet again”, says the acclaimed US singer Lala Hathaway.
She was addressing media corps during live stream interaction last week in Rosebank.
The RnB sensation returns to SA for the third time as part of the Liberty Intimate Evening Series pencilled for Joburg- Monte Casino and Cape Town, respectively.
Looking relaxed in braids and sipping coffee in her large DOPE mug, the music star is a daughter of the soul legend Donny Hathaway, who has forged her name in the American music industry, having won five Grammys.
“Coming from a family of musicians, it was odd then as a young- girl that other families were not into music, very odd, I must emphasize,” she said, much to laughter of audience.
Describing herself as spiritual person, Lala, says she’s an introvert and shy because until this day, people still ask about her father.
“I do go out with family and partner but, for a limited time because I do not talk that much. I end up talking about my Dad of which at times, it becomes way too personal because I’m still attached to him, spiritually. Because people do ask me about him,” she alluded with a broad smile.
She has created music with big name artists like Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Anderson Paak and Snoop Dogg, amongst others.
Joburg concert take place on 19 January and 20 January at 20:00 and 21 January at 18:00 and the Cape Town leg is on 27 January at 19:00.
Apart from singing she enjoys spinning the vinyls- that prompted a smile from the legendary Greg Maloka, who was in attendance.
On her trip to SA for the third edition, she says she looks forward to relax and get intimate with her fans.
“Wanna let my hair down and introspect with my fellow brothers and sisters of Africa, since my last shows I did not get that enough time to explore SA,” says Lala, who promised to bring along her Legally Blind band.
On fashion, she has promised to wear local garments during both shows; as part of promoting it to the outside world.
Describing herself as no celebrity- the ‘Honestly’ hitmaker released in 2017, opined she’s an activist for children and women abuse internationally.
“Those are the cornerstone of my being- children and women abuse. I cannot sit comfort in my corner and pretend all is well, when children and women abuse goes unwarranted worldwide. Not in my name,” she said strongly.
Regaled in full blue dress attire, Head of Brand Strategy and Sponsorships at Liberty- Marees Bostander, told this reporter that this partnership with “Lala Hathaway speaks volume, as it collaborates with the standards and norms of our company”.

The series follows suite the successful hosting of Gregory Porter shows in 2023 that were sold out.
Lala will be supported by SA’s darling Langa Mavuso, who did not attend the briefing.
Other industry heavyweights namely Nothemba Madumo, (Brenda Sisane-MC for the evening) and Non Botha, graced the occasion.
