Hail the Ndebele ‘Queen’ who is now Dr Esther Mahlangu

Hail the ‘Queen’. Dr Esther Mahlangu, the Ndebele artist who was conferred the Honorary Doctorate at the UJ on Monday.

Now that uGogo Esther Mahlangu has been conferred an honorary doctorate, she will be now addressed to you and yours’ as Dr Mahlangu.

The renowned Ndebele artist and international gallant was on Monday identified as a visionary individual who “broke barriers on her own” at the graduation ceremony held at UJ –Johannesburg Campus.

“Being recognised at home is such a blessing. It shows that my people still see the great work that I do,” she said joyously.

“I’m humbled by the recognition,” she was quoted.

UJ recognized her “legacy as a cultural entrepreneur who has skillfully negotiated local and global worlds and played a major role as an educator”.

Under her belt Dr Mahlangu has received numerous awards and has been critically acclaimed for the painting she did for German made BMW.

In 2006, she received the Order of Ikhamanga, silver class, as well as the Mpumalanga Arts and Culture Award, an award from the French Ministry of Culture as well as two awards from Radio Ndebele among many other awards.

The South African Tourism has also recognized her work and was an ambassador.
