Recalibrated 2025 Macufe returns to its home!

YES, it is back!

The annual Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) returns to the province of Free State.

The new look Macufe will now be held on September 2025 instead of usual October month.

On August 1, a media launch will be held at the capital City- Bloemfontein, to outline the programme and preparatory work done behind the scenes.

During my interview with MEC for Economic and Tourism in the province Toto Makume, did indicate the recalibrated Macufe will return in 2025.

“Guided by the theme ‘Back to our African Heart and Soul’, the central focus of the recalibrated MACUFE programme will be on arts and culture related activities.

Reverting back to its original concept, the festival will therefore elevate the African cultural heritage as a pivot around which our existence should revolve as Africans, and in  line with the mandate of the Department of nation building and social cohesion”, said Member of the Executive Council for SACR, Ntombizanele Sifuba, during her Budget Speech.

The planned presentation of the Sesotho Musical Theatre as part of the MACUFE Theatre Programme as well as the Traditional Dance productions as part of the MACUFE Dance Fiesta, amongst others, underpins the cultural and heritage oriented nature of the recalibrated MACUFE programme.

Surprisingly, the annual Macufe Cup is not part of the programme.

Macufe in the past was clouded by politics and irregular awarding of tender to individuals/companies close to those with power, that resulted in imminent discontinuation of the fest years ago.

Now that the new broom has cleaned up, the country looks forward to a revitalised 2025 Macufe.

The programme of the festival is anticipated to unfold as follows:

• MACUFE Launch: 01 August

• MACUFE Film Festival: 3 and 4 September

• MACUFE Dance Fiesta: 3 and 4 September

• MACUFE Theatre Festival: 3 to 5 September

• MACUFE Comedy and Poetry Night: 5 September

• MACUFE Visual Arts, Craft and Literature Exhibition:

3 to 6 September

• MACUFE Hiphop v/s Amapiano: 5 September

• MACUFE Main Festival: 6 September

• MACUFE Gospel Festival: 7 September
