THE African National Congress 5th National General Council has not taken a stance for President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa to step down.
This is because the meeting is not an elective conference that will happen in 2027, when Pres Ramaphosa’s term ends.
He’s in second term as party president.
This follows weeks of talks behind closed doors to ‘eject’ him and in retaliation vowed “those who want me out, must come out and say so, I will hand in my resignation tomorrow”.
“The ANC national executive committee agreed that the election results placed a responsibility on the ANC to ensure unity, stability, peace and progress in the country,” Ramaphosa told well-behaved delegates from all provinces on Monday morning, at Birchwood Hotel- Boksburg.
“This thing of opulence and showing-off cars and money must come to an end, as we begin with campaigns in preparations for the 2026 local elections, in our respective communities,” he warned.
He also defended the composition of the government of national unity (GNU), which includes the DA, during his address.
While there is no term limit, as head of state he can only serve two terms, and his second comes to an end in 2029.
The four-day NGC runs until Thursday.
On the payment of staff, the ANC says some of them have been paid, and the rest will be sorted out soon.
Meanwhile, according sources ANC’s senior Thoko Didiza is rumoured to be favoured by Pres Ramaphosa and party national chairperson Gwede Mantashe, among several ANC leaders, for the party’s leadership role.
Also in the hat is the name of electricity minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and EC’s Premier Oscar Mabuyane.
