Ishashalazi honours unsung theatrical heroes and heroines

THEATRICAL PRACTITIONERS were honoured at the Gauteng 2018 Ishashalazi Theatre Awards held in Carletonville, Merafong last Friday.

Presented an award. Actor and theatre star Meshack Mavuso presented awards at the Ishashalazi dance, poetry and production ceremony held at Carltonville.

The awards honours best theatre, poetry and dance productions from the 2018 Ishashalazi Festival staged in February.

Actors Sello Maake, Dieketseng Mnisi-Nkosi , Hamilton Dlamini and Meshack Mavuso, who is a product of the Ishashalazi Theatre programme, were in attendance to present awards to performers, writers, directors and  producers whose work stood out amongst the rest.

Theatre production Meokgo ya lesego was the biggest winner of the night, scooping 4 awards including; Best music composed in a production composed by Grace of Destiny, Best Actor Female for Asanda Mvusi, Best Supporting Actor for Male Bulelani Mbele and Best Supporting Actor Female for Amanda Maqhaloti.

Following with 3 wins was You are an Eagle, winning Moment of Brilliance in the production, Best Director for Khanyisile Vilakazi and Best Supporting Actor Female for Sindiswa Khumalo.

Meatology by Impulsive 1632 was awarded Best Production, as well as a Best Supporting Actor Male for Nkosana Serelwa.

Tears of an African Child by Sakhisizwe production was named Most Promising Production, while theatre practitioner Mike Manana received the Life Time Community Theatre Development award for his deep dedication to developing community theatre Gauteng.

“Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners, whose work continues to showcase Gauteng as the home of artistic excellence.

The Gauteng provincial government is committed to expansion of the arts beyond development level in communities into the mainstream, as creative industries remain one of the biggest contributors to economic growth in the province,” said Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Faith Mazibuko.
