Masina received 117 votes and was up against DA mayoral candidate Ghaleb Cachalia who received 106.
This means that the ruling party has managed to keep one of the three metros in Gauteng.
The ANC lost City of Tshwane and City of Johannesburg to the DA. The opposition party’s respective mayors Solly Msimanga and Herman Mashaba have been elected into their offices in Tshwane and Johannesburg respectively.
Masina’s nomination got off to a rocky start when the Democratic Alliance questioned whether he is still a member of Parliament and cabinet‚ following his bid for the mayor’s post in the City of Ekurhuleni.
Masina was the deputy minister of the Department of Trade and Industry when the ruling party announced him as its mayoral candidate.
DA mayoral candidate Ghaleb Cachalia asked Masina to say for certain whether he was or was not receiving remuneration as a cabinet member.
“Councillor Masina has indeed resigned as a member of cabinet and Parliament. We can provide proof of this later‚” the ANC’s Robert Mashego replied.
A total number of 224 were counted. There was 1 spoilt vote and 223 valid votes.
