The purpose- raise funds for organizations in need and more than
R50 000 was handed over to 10 charities, following the participation of both media and celebs –who got the taste of what players experience while participating in Tsogo Sun’s thrilling annual Roulette Masters Tournament, currently taking place at all 14 of the group’s casino properties across the country.
Finals take place March 25 at Gold Reef City.
The other seven organizations each pocketed R2000.
SLM represented the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) South Africa – inland branch) Soweto that won R10 000.
Multiple Sclerosis (many scars) is a progressive, degenerative disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), including the brain, optic nerve and spinal cord. Each nerve fiber in the white matter of the CNS is surrounded and insulated by a protective layer called myelin.
Nerve signals travel along the myelin between the brain and the rest of the body.
According to Thembi Sene, chairperson for Multiple Sclerosis-Inland Soweto, this degenerative disorder is not easy to detect, hence it has no treatment.
“The cause is as yet unknown, in short this is why your movement, feeling and co-ordination will be affected depending on the location of the “plaques” or scars in the brain and/or spinal cord,” says Sene.
In most cases the symptoms in the initial stages can occur suddenly without any recognisable cause and when the symptomatic occurrence of MS or a change in them for worse happens is known as a relapse.
We need to educate our people throughout the country on this disorder. (Un)fortunately, internationally it is known and it is getting the attention, whereas in SA it’s not, continued Sene.
Currently, there are four types of Multiple Sclerosis- namely Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS); Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS); Primary Progressive Multiple sclerosis (PPMS) and Benign Multiple Sclerosis (BMS).
Some known symptoms of MS:
- Tingling or a sensation of pins and needles anywhere in the body
- Difficulty in walking
- Dragging either foot
- Loss of coordination
- Feeling as though one is made of cotton, rubber or jelly
- Loss of sensation or distorted sensation anywhere in the body
- Clumsiness
- Double or blurred vision or temporary blindness in the eye
- Slurred speech
- An urgency to urinate or inability to pass urine
- Loss of balance
- Unnatural fatigue
- A feeling of tight bands around the trunk or lower limbs
- Spasticity of the muscles
- Tremors in the hands
