JOHANNESBURG and Berlin sit thousands of kilometres apart, but in the world of DJ MidTempo, the distance between the two can sometimes be measured in a kick drum, a bassline and a groove.
The South African artist, producer and business executive, born Theo Mseka, is navigating two cities with powerful but very different relationships with dance music.
Johannesburg sits at the centre of a South African scene that has given the world sounds including Amapiano, Afro House, Afro Tech and 3-Step. Berlin, meanwhile, has built a global reputation as one of electronic music’s most influential cultural capitals.
Rather than choosing between these worlds, DJ MidTempo is bringing them together.
That collision sits at the heart of his newly released debut album, Cheza Kidogo, a 12-track project released on 11 September 2026 via Tahoe Studios.
Although his corporate career regularly takes him to Germany and he spends significant time in Berlin, DJ MidTempo’s artistic identity remains firmly connected to South Africa.
The result is not an attempt to make African music sound European. Instead, Cheza Kidogo explores what happens when a South African artist takes the rhythms and musical instincts of home into one of the world’s most established electronic music environments.
It is a two-way conversation.
Johannesburg brings rhythm, warmth, African musicality and an electronic culture increasingly influencing dancefloors around the world. Berlin brings experimentation, underground club culture and a different approach to electronic production.
DJ MidTempo’s connection to South Africa isn’t merely sonic.
The album brings together a wide collection of African talent, with its opening run particularly geared towards South African dancefloors.
Zimbali features Luvintage and K.D.M Luminous, followed by ‘Nobody Else, Sabela, Zaka and the aptly titled Durban Nights.
The official release ultimately stretches across 12 tracks, ending with DJ MidTempo’s Afro House remix of Monie.
The collaborations and musical direction reinforce an important part of DJ MidTempo’s story: his life may increasingly cross international borders, but South Africa remains a major creative anchor.
For DJ MidTempo, Berlin represents another layer of his musical identity rather than a departure from South Africa.
Moving between different environments has exposed him to contrasting approaches to nightlife, production and electronic music culture.
That perspective gives Cheza Kidogo its borderless character.
The album doesn’t ask DJ MidTempo to decide whether he belongs to Johannesburg or Berlin. Instead, it allows both places to influence what he creates.
And at a time when South African electronic sounds are increasingly travelling internationally, that exchange feels particularly relevant.
Away from music, Mseka operates in the corporate world as CEO and Managing Director of immowelt and AVIV Germany GmbH.
That means his life regularly moves between executive responsibilities and creative ones — between meetings and music, business travel and studio sessions, the boardroom and the dancefloor.
Remarkably, approximately 70% of Cheza Kidogo was produced while travelling, much of it with headphones on and a laptop open aboard flights between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Berlin.
