This is part of the Premiers’ Social Cohesion- a Gauteng Provincial initiative- that would see Blue Bulls clash against The Lions and South Africa ‘A’ side hosting the Barbarians in the Cup game.
The double-header games will take place at Orlando Stadium on Friday 23 June 2017.
This follows the mouthwatering 2010 clash were Lions beat the Cape Stormers for the first time, at the stadium that brought thousands of fans-black and white- in unison to celebrate unity in sport and in our beloved country.
“We as a Province need to lead the way to show we can unite under the banner of sport”, said Premier David Makhura. Sport is a common denominator in our Country, and in turn Rugby needs to transcend all differences and serve to remind us that we have a lot more in common than that which divides us.”
Both SA ‘A’ and the Barbarians will tour Soweto on Thursday, in an effort to encourage fans to come in huge numbers.
Gauteng MEC for Sports, Faith Mazibuko says: “Social Cohesion is one of the key drivers of the change needed in our country and in turn our Province. An active Citizenry in building social cohesion and nation building can contribute enormously towards the transformation, modernisation and re-industrialisations of our economy and society.”
Gates open from 12 onwards on Friday, and will see barefoot U14 curtain-raiser match kicking off from 14:00. A line up of activities is on the cards as well for families.
Stadium Management SA CEO, Jacques Grobbelaar says: “Orlando Stadium is going to create an electrifying and safe atmosphere for all those who will be in attendance.
We appeal to all those coming through to abide to the safety regulations stipulated and outlined on the day so that we can have an incident-free event. We urge people to get their tickets on time to avoid last minute rush and disappointment.”
The Golden Lions versus Blue Bulls: 5pm
Main match between SA ‘A’ versus French Barbarians: 8pm.
