Matsatsansa take on Cape Town City at the Moses Mabhida Stadium this weekend, with both sides aiming for their maiden MTN8 title and with Eric Tinkler’s side aiming for silverware, their captain feels a triumph will hand them invaluable confidence and momentum.
“As SuperSport players, we know that we’re are in this club to lift trophies. What a great opportunity we have on Saturday to do that within few a months after the start of the season‚” he told reporters.
Having last won the Premiership title a decade ago, the former Doncaster Rovers midfielder is keen for his side to show more consistency in order to secure league honours.
“Last season we just fell short at the death in the league‚ while this time we want to change that. We were on top of the log for the two-thirds of last season.
“That’s what is motivating us this time around – we want to go all the way. There’s no point in patting ourselves on the back for being top in December or February,” the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finalist added.
“If we win on Saturday, hopefully, that can catapult us into a stronger league push than we had last season.”
Cape Town City’s Benny McCarthy expressed that they will be fully focused at the task at hand come Saturday rather than events of the past.
“The focus is not on Eric,” McCarthy told the media. “What happened, happened, it’s in the past. We’ve all moved on. My focus now is just on my team. We have to be strong and tough, and we have to play with heart. It won’t be easy, but we have enough quality and we have players who can win games,” he said.
McCarthy equally reserved praise for Tinkler and his charges ahead of this much-anticipated encounter which will determine a team that will land their first major silverware of the season.
“SuperSport, under Eric, will be disciplined and organised. It’s going to be tough for us. Eric’s teams are always structured, very well organised, and difficult to break down, but I think we are able to do it. 0
We want to take a lot from our games against Wits this season – because Wits and SuperSport are very similar with regards to strength and depth. I’m certainly expecting an entertaining and interesting cup final,” he added.
The game kicks off from 19:30.
