THE Scorpion Kings Live experience alone is estimated to have generated R150 million in event revenue for the province of Gauteng.
This goes on to show why it is still Africa’s leading events destination, and the fest amplified that status.
SK- which attracted more than 70 000 fans, packed the Calabash- FNB Stadium this past weekend, from the very opening moments, it made it clear that this was not simply a collection of performances: it was structured across three chapters – heritage and memory; people and sound; and the hood and the world- creating one cultural story that traced the evolution of Amapiano and the wider South African creative ecosystem, from hip-hop, Maskandi, Gqom, Afro-soul, house to contemporary South African sounds.
DJ Maphorisa arriving on stage behind the wheel of a red BMW 320i Gusheshe, a cultural icon in its own right and a fitting reflection of the township imagery, showed the abundance of talent SA should be proud of.
Gauteng Tourism reports further that Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo (AAD 2026) with an estimated 80 000 visitors, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahli Saudi at Loftus Versfeld Stadium- Gauteng delivered a compelling showcase of its world-class hosting capabilities.
With over 195 000 attendees having experiencedmusic, sport and aviation this delivered a significant boost for tourism across the province, with a reported R49m flowing into the local economy through accommodation, transport, food, merchandise and visitor spending.
More than 2 300 jobs (direct or indirect) were supported through the event value chain.
Most importantly, the weekend once again highlighted Gauteng’s greatest asset: its people!
This week the province welcomes Comic Con Africa 2026, expected to attract more than 70 000 visitors, alongside the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz and Marble Circus, further cementing Gauteng status as South Africa’s cultural capital and the continent’s most dynamic events destination.
