One would assume it made sense considering Nakhane has been in the limelight for reasons best known in the country.
Currently on tour in Europe promoting his second album You Will Not Die, set to release in South Africa March 16, through BMG.
Nakhane’s album is a diverse and emotionally charged body of work, documenting the joys, pain, confusion and hope he experienced in recent years, if not months ago.
Interloper, currently a brand new video making waves highlights what to expect in the album, accompanied by visuals as captivating as the track, the gospel-like ‘Interloper’ began life in a very different form, and has become a soaring, multi-faceted alternative pop song.
The Alice born but grew up in Port Elizabeth, the majestic Eastern Cape- Touré quipped: “I spent about 3 years writing ‘Interloper’.
It first started out as a Pornography-era The Cure homage. Then it morphed into a slow, acoustic Iron & Wine thing. Ben Christophers (producer) and I decided to make it a stomp and a romp. Something that one could spin around to. Even though it’s a song about irrational jealousy and anonymous sex.”
Born in a deeply religious community, his upbringing ignited his love of music and unlocked his flair for performance, yet also taught him shame that has proved difficult to rid himself of.
“When I was Christian and prayed to God everyday, I had only hatred for myself,” he says.
“Everyday of my life, I was doing all I possibly could to be like everyone else, to be heterosexual. I was even convinced I would be able to ‘heal’ my homosexuality. I was living in constant fear; controlling myself at all times.”
The soft-speaking Nakhane has been in the press for reasons- depending which side of the fans is one seated- in relation to the controversial Inxeba (The Wound) were he’s the lead actor.
As a result of Court order, the movie has been given greenlight to screen although for a certain period.
After his London show, Nakhane makes his return to SA in May for shows in Johannesburg, Swaziland, Durban and Reunion.
Indeed Touré ‘refuses to die‘.
