ANC’s Makhubo new CoJ boss

Makhubo, who is the chair of the Greater Johannesburg region of the ANC, outmanouvered EFF and DA to the hotly contested Mayoral position.

Makhubo won with 137 votes as the ANC had the most amount of seats in the Joburg council – 121 – and needed an additional 15 votes from other parties assuming all its councillors toed the party line.

Makhubo defeated the DA’s Funzela Ngobeni and the EFF’s Musa Novela.

The vote on Wednesday marked the second attempt to elect the City of Johannesburg’s new mayor after proceedings were postponed last week, that prompted Gauteng Premier David Makhura threatening to enter the fray and take charge on the controversial ‘majority’.

The dispute over what constitutes a majority – with some parties arguing that the candidate with the highest amount of votes would become Joburg’s new mayor and others saying that a majority must mean over 50% of the vote – was resolved earlier on Wednesday.

With the ‘new sheriff in town’ lets see how and whether Makhubo will toe the line- despite controversy hovering over his head on allegations he secured millions of rands from City’s contract?
