Mothiba joined the police in 1982 and served as commander at the Alexandra police station for seven years.
More recently, he was the divisional commissioner responsible for visible policing, Phiyega told reporters in Johannesburg.
“Those that know General Mothiba will confirm that he is a very competent, experienced and skilled leader and well-suited to lead Gauteng Province,” the national police commissioner said.
“He has been acting in this role for some time and I know that he will continue to receive the full support of the local and national management team as they continue to work hard to make Gauteng safer.”
He has a national diploma in police administration, a bachelor’s degree in police science, and a BA Honours degree.
