WORLD ATHLETICS has a new member, who is proudly flying the South African flag.
James Mosebetsi Moloi, who is the President of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and a Sports and Recreation Manager in the City of Johannesburg, has been invited to become a member of the World Plan Implementation Working Group (WPWG) for a one-year term.
The WPWG provides oversight and support in the implementation of the World Plan for Athletics 2022-2030. Its role is to provide advice and recommendations to the Council and the World Athletics Senior staff on the implementation of the World plan for the next eight years.
“My appointment came after an assessment of my performance in South Africa in terms of athletics at large and this will play a vital role as it will also help the Athletics South Africa to influence decisions in the world,” says Moloi.
A passionate former athlete, Moloi is already hands on in promoting and championing the World Plan at a local and global level, and developing an engagement and communication approach to educate and promote it.
Before suffering a knee injury that slowed him down, the former Diepkloof, Soweto, resident used to enjoy long distance running.
Moloi was voted ASA president last year. He was also the chairperson of the Zone 3 Sports Council and Deputy Chairperson of the Boksburg Sports Council. He also chaired the Central Gauteng Athletics Federation’s Road Running Commission.
“The total number of countries and territories currently affiliated to World Athletics stands at 214. South Africa is one of the members. To show that South Africa has the capability to lead such an organisation, they appointed a member of the Working Group from South Africa to form part of the 11th new members in World Athletics with more members than the United Nations,” he says.
A human resource management graduate within the Department of Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Moloi idles by reading books and spending quality time with his family, which he says has shown him great support in these unpleasant Covid-19 times.
Moloi is looking forward to adding recommendations and bringing positive change within the world athletics space.
