‘Hands-off’ KZN Provincial Commissioner as he clarifies his intervention

IS politics at game following reports that crime buster and the KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Service’s provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, was involved in the prevention of a Police arrest at Westville Maximum Prison, KZN?

The Provincial Commissioner was reported to have had a hand in the non-‘arrest’ of a senior official who was alleged to run a drug syndicate at the Prison, some months ago, that has hogged headlines.

In his defence, PC Mkhwanazi denied the interference and only wanted to establish if proper processes were followed.

Mkhwanazi said he contacted the commander when the arrest happened and wanted to know what led to it. He said the officer said the drugs were in one of the prison’s residential facilities. When they searched the house, they did not find the drugs, according to TimesLive, after a tip-off.

Drugs were found in one of the prison’s communal premises.

They then found the drugs in a dustbin outside the house. Mkhwanazi said a crime scene expert was not invited to process the scene. The police officer who effected the arrest was not 100% sure that the arrested officer placed the drugs in the dustbin.

As things stand, PC Mkhwanazi remains steadfast as he only ‘wanted due process to take place, that’s all’.

Since taking over as the Provincial Commissioner in KZN, Mkhwanazi and his team have dealt with criminals blow by blow, taking them down, thus receiving thumbs-up and support from the public.

As a result, other provincial commissioners have been ordered to follow the same route on how to deal with hardened criminals.

The no-nonsense but soft speaking PC Mkhwanazi also lambasted prisons labelling them “academies for criminals”.

Now is politics at play here, in trying to frame him and is there more under-hand tactics that will try and derail him from his job?
