Downs’ dedicate the Nedbank Cup win to fans

THRONGS OF Mamelodi Sundowns came in large numbers to witness their team do a treble at Royal Marang Stadium, Rustenburg.

The PSL champs won 2-1 (extra-time) against the tough opponents Marumo Gallants to secure their sixth title by winning the 2021/22 Nedbank Cup.

Although security lapse became a burning issue after fans invaded the pitch to celebrate Downs’ win, the winning team did not mind sharing this well-deserved “toast of champagne” with the fans.

Downs’ has bagged the MTN8, PSL and now the Nedbank Cup.

“Some bought as much as 10 packs of pap and meat for their staff a day. For me it means a lot and will help my family to survive for the next two months,” says Montsho- who support’s Downs’ and also made a plea to decision makers to consider Rustenburg for future matches.

Elated former striker at Downs’ Daniel “Mambush” Mudau says this win is “dedicated to the fans, who have been behind us through thick and thin.”

Tobie Badenhorst- Nedbank head of sponsorship, said they were pleased with all the planning and the finals itself. Fans came in large numbers and we’re happy no incidents were reported.

They enjoyed themselves and for us we’re grateful we took the decision to host the finals in Rusty, he said.

MEC for Agriculture in NW, Desbo Mohono also praised the organisational planning and said she would like to see more major soccer events returning to the City.

Minister of sport and culture Nathi Mthethwa, also graced the final and wished the winning team well but also congratulated Gallants for their bravery.
