WITH 2025 national matric around the corner, Umalusi is happy with the appointment of markers.
The education quality assurance body was responding to concerns on shortage of markers particularly in the Basic Education Department for History and Paper 3 home and first additional language.
During media briefing, Umalusi promised it was satisfied that the appointment of markers across all four assessment bodies is progressing accordingly.
“All markers appointed across the four assessment bodies will be trained prior to the commencement of the marking.
The marking process will unfold in a staggered manner, commencing on the 15th of November and ending on 18 December 2025. Umalusi will monitor the implementation of a staggered marking approach to ensure that the process is not compromised,” promised the assurance body.
Umalusi said that while some bodies, including the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) and Higher Education and Training departments, were still finalising their appointments, it would continue to audit the process to ensure it meets required standards.
According toSenior manager Mary-Antoinette Dliwayo, strategies, such as additional recruitment, an early start to marking and extending the marking period, would address gaps before marking begins.
Umalusi also confirmed over one million candidates are registered to write this year’s National Senior Certificate and other end of year assessments.
Its unclear if shortage of markers was a new experience.
The assurance body assured security measures have been tightened ahead of the 2025 exams set to begin next week Tuesday.
