Entering its 6th edition, the Jazz Cares initiative went down at the Bram Fischer Community Hall, Soweto last week and shall continue in other areas until the beginning of the main fest later this year.
According to the organisers T-Musicman, through the Jazz Cares initiative, community groups that are usually left out of the mainstream entertainment are included as a reminder that they have not been left out on the fringes.
Founder of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Peter Tladi says: ‘We are very proud of the Jazz Cares program and the benefits it brings to our local communities. We started the initiative in 2010 and have seen itsteadily grow each year with events previously being staged in other areas.”
We look forward to bringing Jazz Cares to Soweto as its always very rewarding and humbling to share the love of Jazz with our grassroots communities,” he says.
Since this being a Gauteng initiative it has been hosted at Newtown, Alexandra, Sedibeng and Diepsloot, respectively.
Sultry Nombulelo Maqethuka, previous winner of the Old Mutual Young jazz artist of the Year in 2001 and a seasoned performer who has shared the stage with a number of the country’s top musicians, including Sibongile Khumalo, Sipho Mabuse and Judith Sephuma, will headline this year’s Jazz Cares initiative up until the main event in September.
Celebrated Lesedi FM daily mornings host Dr Chomane Chomane graced the event and shared his thoughts with the elders.
