Lenacapavir major rollout in Joburg

THE City of Johannesburg Department of Health hascommenced the rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN), a groundbreakinglong-acting HIV prevention medicine that offers eligible individualsprotection against HIV infection through a twice-yearly injection.

As the country’s most populous province and one of the regions carrying a significant HIV burden, Johannesburg has been identified as a key implementation site for the first phase of the programme. The City of Johannesburg has introduced Lenacapavir at 24 healthcare facilities, targeting populations at high risk of HIV infection.

Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable form of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) that offers HIV-negative individuals at substantial risk of HIV acquisition.

Lenacapavir is administered once every six months, it offers an important additional prevention option for people who may experience challenges with daily oral HIV prevention medication. The injectable complements existing HIV prevention methods such as oral PrEP, HIV testing services, condoms, voluntary medical male circumcision and Post exposure Prophylaxis.

Gauteng has been allocated sufficient Lenacapavir stock to initiate 56 079 eligible clients between 8 June 2026 and 31 March 2027 across the province.

Additional stock will be supplied quarterly to ensure continuity of the programme and access to services.

Phase one of the rollout will prioritise adolescent girls and young women, adolescent boys  and young men, key populations including sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender persons and people who inject drugs, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women who remain vulnerable to HIV infection.

“Lenacapavir forms part of a comprehensive package of HIV prevention interventions and does not replace HIV testing, condom use, STI prevention and treatment, voluntary medical male circumcision, or treatment services for people living with HIV”, said Cllr Ennie Makhafola MMC for Health and Social Development at the City of Johannesburg.
