Pitso Mosimane, who has been punted to lead Bafana Bafana, is sticking to his guns.
According to sources close to the talks, the South African Football Association wanted to offer Mosimane a mere R5m for his services, per month but it was rejected from the onset, following SAFA NEC extraordinary meeting over the weekend.
Bone of contention: former Bafana coach Hugo Broos was on a monthly salary of $75 000 (R1,4-million), and as part of the package, received an additional R70 000 per month for accommodation in Sandton and also return flights to Belgium.
The Belgian did the unthinkable by taking the national to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.
It has been reliably learnt that the former Bafana coach will bring along his technical team Musi Matlaba (performance analysis coach), Kabelo Rangoaga (fitness coach) and Kyle Solomon (football performance analyst), thus the remuneration and overall package be comparable or above the one afforded to the former coach Broos.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Ahly coach wants a single package for himself and his team members after the national association proposed that his three lieutenants be remunerated separately.
“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” Safa president Danny Jordaan, was quoted at the meeting.
The Krugersdorp-born coach Mosimane and team led by wife and agent Moira Tlhagale, are arguing that there appears to be a recurring perception that Mosimane is “too expensive” or that Safa would be unable to afford his services and those of his technical team.
They maintain that does not accurately reflect Mosimane’s position. Their stance is that the appointment and remuneration of the head coach and his three assistants should be considered and negotiated as one comprehensive technical package.
It is understood the incoming coach has reiterated a willingness to start working as early as tomorrow and to work without agreed remuneration while negotiations for a more “respectable” package continue in the background.
