Soweto residents unhappy with processing of asylum seekers entering SA

SOWETO residents intend to protest at Home Affairs offices in Pimville and Orlando West today following a demonstration in Orlando West.

The demonstration follows a Constitutional Court ruling regarding the asylum application process for asylum seekers entering the country.

According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, eight vehicles were damaged during demonstrations on October 9 when community members clashed with local business owners.

No injuries were reported.

A community source initially told Soweto Urban that the demonstration in Orlando West had been postponed until tomorrow, but later indicated it would proceed as planned.

Fihla confirmed that the JMPD was aware of reports that the protest would continue at the Orlando West Home Affairs office.

“The JMPD is already stationed at Home Affairs in Orlando West,” Fihla said.
