Mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau was in attendance alongside Golf SA CEO, Grant Hepburn and Sunshine Tour Commissioner, Selwyn Nathan as celebrity of honour was officially announced as the captain of the South African golf team for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The well-attended golf event also happened to mark the 50 anniversary of Player’s Grand Slam feat harking back to 1965 and also on a personal level – doubled as the celebrated icon’s 80th birthday milestone.
Amongst the players who participated in the event were veteran Vincent Tshabalala, left-handed Nkosana Khoza, SABC Soccer Zone’s Thomas Mlambo, Thomas Msengana (who was also the occasion’s programme director) and the ageing erstwhile Robben Islander, Andrew Mlangeni who regularly plays at the Pimville course.
The order of play took the format of a 4-ball which mixed female and
male groups.
Nathan added that the likes of Investec will be financing the upgrading of the Soweto golf course for the next 5 years in order to bring it to 21st century standards.
