The 23-year-old was stabbed to death in a house in Bezuidenhout Valley, Joburg, around 4pm on Saturday, allegedly by someone he knew.
This is according to the Department of Defence and Military Veterans.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said a 24-year old man was arrested at the scene of the stabbing, where Chumani was certified dead.
The suspect was held by friends of the deceased and was handed over to the police, said Dlamini.
The man was expected to appear on a charge of murder in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Siphiwe Dlamini, spokesman for military veterans in Mapisa-Nqakula’s department, said:
“On behalf of the Department of Defence and the South African National Defence Force in particular, and the entire defence establishment, the Secretary for Defence Dr Sam Gulube and the chief of the SANDF, General Solly Shoke, we send condolences to the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Mr Charles Nqakula and the entire Nqakula family, relatives and friends.”
The ANC added to the condolence messages sent, saying: “Chumani Nqakula, the second of comrade Charles and Nosiviwe’s four children, met his sudden and untimely death following an assault in Johannesburg.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with Chumani’s family and friends, and as we send our deepest sympathies to them, we hope and believe that fond memories of their son and friend will bring comfort during this difficult time of loss,” said ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa.
