A Walk Against Cancer- register and partake in this very important initiative

IN the spirit of 67 Minutes for Hope, a reminder that small actions can change lives, South Africa United Against Cancer (SAUAC) announces that ticket sales are now open and registrations for the 2026 Wellness Walk Against Cancer.

This Mandela Month- July, a movement of hope, unity, and life-saving action begins.

South Africans are invited to come together, take a step, and take responsibility for their own health, for their loved ones, and for communities across the country.

The National Cancer Walk will be hosted on October 24- Saturday at the Rietvlei Zoo, Alberton.

Cancer does not discriminate. It affects every community, every family, every background.

But there is one truth that can change outcomes: Awareness saves lives. Early detection saves lives. Action saves lives. The Wellness Walk Against Cancer encourages South Africans to:

• Know their bodies

• Recognise warning signs

• Engage earlier with health services

• Talk openly about cancer

The Walkathon continues to grow, from 2,500 participants in 2025 to a target of 10,000 people in 2026.

This year brings together:

• Survivors

• Families

• Youth

• Corporates

• Communities across South Africa

Mandela Month reminds us that change begins with action, even the smallest step.

“This walk brings people together to choose life, to choose awareness, and to stand for one another,” says Tshepang Lutshaba, Founder of SAUAC.

“Every step is a voice raised against cancer. Every voice moves us closer to a future where fewer lives are lost because of late detection.”

At the heart of this movement are people whose lives have been forever changed by cancer. One of them is Sinenhlanhla Gwala, a breast cancer survivor who underwent a double mastectomy and has turned her experience into a mission of awareness, hope, and community upliftment.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares:

“My breast cancer diagnosis changed my life in ways I could never have imagined. Facing a double mastectomy was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, but it also taught me the importance of knowing your body, paying attention to changes, and seeking help early. Early detection can make all the difference.”

Today, Sinenhlanhla is passionate about helping others recognise the warning signs of breast cancer and empowering women to take charge of their health.

“I’m registering for the SAUAC Against Cancer Walkathon because I want women in our communities to understand that breast self-examinations are not just routine checks, they can save lives. We need to know our bodies, talk openly about breast health, and never ignore something that feels unusual. If sharing my story encourages even one person to get checked sooner, then it’s worth it. This walk is about education, awareness, and reminding every person that they matter enough to make their health a priority.”

Proceeds from ticket sales help bring this national movement to life, from organising the event to supporting cancer awareness efforts, including contributions to partner organisations working in education and community outreach.
