Appointment for new Public Protector has begun as Parliamentarians battle to shortlist candidates!

MADONSELA
Will be missed. Public Protector Adv Thuli Mandonsela will be missed following a sterling performance and receiving accolades both locally and internationally.

As such the Parliamentarians are meeting today to begin shortlisting candidates to become South Africa’s next Public Protector.

Her deputy, Kevin Malunga, Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai and Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Willie Hofmeyr are among the candidates.

Members of the public had until last week Friday to comment on or lodge objections to the candidates.

Non-Governmental Organisation Corruption Watch has compiled a 143-page a dossier on the candidates, which looks at whether they are suitably qualified and have courted controversy.

Makhosi Khoza, the chairperson of the parliamentary ad hoc committee tasked with selecting the Public Protector, says the dossier is a useful resource.

“They looked more at the ‘fit and proper’ aspect, and the ‘fear or favour’ attribute. I think it was a good angle they came with, and I think possibly some of their comments will inform the decision of the ad hoc committee.”

The committee will meet to determine the criteria for shortlisting and the number of people to be short-listed, before Members of Parliament motivate for their preferred candidate.
