After landing the OR Tambo International Airport, following a flight from Paris, the former player went for a haircut in Corlett Drive in Melrose.
However, three men armed with firearms walked in and robbed him.
No one was hurt.
His Manager, Percy Adams said, “The one guy closed the door and told everyone to sit down and be calm, the other said ‘please give us your watch, earrings and that nice wedding ring’.”
Adams said that there were about nine other customers inside the hair salon, but McCarthy was the only one that was robbed.
His manager said although no shots were fired, the men were definitely carrying weapons.
“He was pointing the gun in his face the whole time and he kept telling him to hurry up.”
Adams says the gunmen didn’t even want the other people’s belongings and just went for the former soccer star.
He added that McCarthy is “fine”.
McCarthy is in Johannesburg to feature as an analyst on SuperSport for last night’s UEFA semi-finals which Juventus went on to beat Real Madrid 2-1.
