BYD SA unveils latest ATTO 2 DM-i, a compact SUV

SOUTH AFRICAN’s woke up in good spirit.

Firstly, our soccer national team Bafana Bafana are only minutes away from entertaining Mexico, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup duel, tonight.

Kick-off at 9pm CAT.

Secondly, one of the world’s celebrated brands BYD (beyond your dreams) unveiled its latest BYD ATTO 2 DM-i, a compact SUVs to SA market.

It comes with advanced DM-i Super Hybrid technology with its industry-leading Blade Battery, delivering the efficiency of electric driving together with the flexibility and convenience of a traditional combustion-powered vehicle.

The result is a practical, intelligent and versatile SUV engineered for modern lifestyles.

According to BYD SA, the two derivatives ATTO 2 DM-i Comfort and the range-topping ATTO 2 DM-i Dynamic, means the company has vast interest in the SA market, so is investment, having launched three years ago in mzansi.

We took it for a drive at the launch today in Midrand, with one of SAs celebrated motoring guru Lerato Matebese, who agreed the price range is ‘fair’ within the plug-in sector.

Both derivatives range from R449,900 for the entry-level comfort model and extending to R489,900 for the range-topping dynamic model.

They both come in DM-i Super Hybrid system, which combines a highly efficient petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a smooth, responsive and economical driving experience.

Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa, remarked company’s long-term vision for the South African market, alluding: “The introduction of the ATTO 2 DM-i is another significant step in BYD’s mission to accelerate the transition towards smarter and more sustainable mobility in South Africa.

We understand that many consumers are interested in electrified vehicles but are looking for a solution that fits seamlessly into their daily lives. The ATTO 2 DM-i delivers exactly that, combining exceptional fuel efficiency, advanced technology, outstanding safety and practical everyday usability in a package that is both attainable and exciting.

We believe it will become one of the most compelling offerings in the compact SUV segment.”

As we took it for a spin, Matebese was also impressed with the handling as we approached a corner, having accelerated 140km/h along highway, that solicited an attention from a cop in a white, unmarked Golf GTI- he gave us that look- bloody agent…

Upon entry, the BYD’s signature blend of innovation and comfort, including a premium cabin, advanced connectivity features, intelligent driver-assistance systems, a rotating touchscreen infotainment display, keyless access, multiple safety technologies and the renowned Blade Battery, showed BYD means business in the EV market.

“South Africans have embraced BYD’s growing range of vehicles, and we are excited to continue building on that momentum.

The ATTO 2 DM-i introduces a new audience to the benefits of electrified mobility while addressing the realities of everyday South African driving. It offers customers a smart, stylish and practical SUV that fits both their lifestyle and their budget,” conceded the gorgeous looking and likeable Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director for BYD Auto South Africa.

The ATTO 2 DM-i enters one of South Africa’s most competitive vehicle categories and has been carefully positioned to appeal to first-time new energy vehicle buyers, says Chang, who was nicknamed “Stevovo” a township slang for Steve, by the MC for the day.

BYD offers customers advanced DM-i Super Hybrid powertrain, Blade Battery technology, a combined driving range of up to 930 km, keyless entry and start, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof and a comprehensive suite of safety features.

The Dynamic derivative further elevates the ownership experience with premium PU seating, a 50W wireless phone charger, electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, front parking radars, intelligent driving assistance technologies and electric-folding exterior mirrors, offering customers an even higher level of comfort, convenience and connectivity.

The SUVs now available in the market- offers impressive fuel efficiency and extended driving range, making it equally suited to daily commuting and longer road trips.

Now Bafana should do their work on the pitch tonight, as much as BYD SA has delivered on its mandate.
